Good Morning, old friend!- # 238

Two very distinguished Sikh gentlemen greet each other and chat in Southall. This is one of my favourite snaps.

  1. Does anyone know why all of the people from India have settled in your city?

  2. Do you think their attire makes them look more distinguished than say two northerners chewing the fat?

NB I'm wondering about this "unlock mobile phones" sign. Sounds a bit dodgy to me

NBB, just on a technical note, you haven't got your camera stuck on a high ISO setting? The last few photos have a lot of digital noise in them, and it doesn't look as though the lighting warrants it

  3. @Richard: a)"distinguishment" is an aura. In a land of "flat caps" a turban certainly "distguishes" you from all the others. b)I almost commented on the justaposition of the air of propriety projected by the two "distiguished" ones and the "unlockers" scribbled notice c)I purposely locked the camera on ISO 400 because of fluctuating light and the desire for faster shutter speed at long focal lengths.

  4. Love the colors on the street, literally and figuratively speaking.

  5. I like this photo quite a bit myself. There's so much going on! So, the yellow sign is advertising what is for sale in the store? Phones for sale, right near both kinds of pay telephone booths--that's neat. And do I see a real Woolworth's across the street? Is it a variety store, like the ones I grew up with in the USA? Finally, I agree one hundred percent with Ming's comment.

  6. I think the point I was struggling with, and didn't quite make, is why do we look at other cultures and see this sort of thing readily - a sympathetic appreciation of community, culture, tradition etc, and yet we struggle to see it or realise it in our own?

Because Southall is far more tolerant of other people. It is possible to get on with your live without some one else blaming you for something.

The Poles are the latest to have integrated into Southall businesses without problems.
