Studies in glass 2 - # 08/83

You've already seen this from a slightly different perspective, but I wanted to show this wide-angle shot because it places the glass-house in the Duke of Northumberland's parkland at Syon House firmly into its "English Landscape" setting. You enter the park and come round the bend and... !!!!... there it is!!! It's quite breathtaking to see in this context.

Even more interesting: the Duke's parkland and his great house are on the west bank of the Brent. Here we have "noble magnificence", but immediately opposite on the east bank of the river we have the highly industrial Brentford canal docks. These contrasts make a walking tour even more interesting.

  1. That's a nice photo - dappled sunlight, shadows framing the subject etc etc

  2. ... oops that etc etc sounded a bit dismissive - didn't mean it to

  3. That's an outstanding photo, one close to my heart because the light is the main artisan in making it exceptional. The dark shadows in the foreground and sides frame the glasshouse beautifully. The sky is just right too. There's a classical grandeur in the scene... made all the more interesting by your comment about what's around it. Makes me want to visit!

  4. You've surpassed yourself, Chuckeroon. Go to the top of the class and gloat! This is sensational - it's not a photograph, it's a painting. Fabulous. Reminds me of a Tom Stoppard play I saw in London called Arcadia.

This is SO stunningly beautifully. I'm SO impressed. I think I'll go off for a cuppa tea to calm down.

  5. Like Jilly before me, I find this composition quite painterly. Very easy on the eyes. :-)
