Les parapluies de Ham - # 122

May I remind you of the delightful film starring Catherine Deneuve "Les Parapluies de Cherbourg"....a classic of the French "nouvelle vague" cinema, made in 1964. See it! It's a fine film.

On Sunday my village held a very successful event in which several houses opened their gardens to visitors. The rain stopped for 3 hours and a large number of visitors came. All the wonderful cakes (you saw some of them yesterday) were sold, because the teas were also in high demand.

Anyway, here are some nice English people doing what they normally do when rain sweeps in from the Atlantic.

  2. ... at last the rain is gone here, and the French Tennis Championhips (Roland Garros)can get on again after two lousy days. Let's see about Wimbledon.

Yes the film is a classic. No need for me to buy the DVD anyhow. Living in France, there are a number of occasions on TV each year.

  3. I like the idea of being able to show off your garden. I would have gone just to see how the other half lives.

    Your photograph is really nice.

As far as gardens go, I used to have one. In fact it was four. One was Japanese with a pond, island, curved bridge and all.

That was replaced by an "English" garden which was not very successful and that then became a French garden and that was even worse. The last was an American style garden. All of that was the first couple of years that we lived here when the five kids were small.

It was changed to a wildlife habitat and now has none of the former things around. I prefer the wildlife habitat.

I try to creat spots that mimic the real places in Nature that specific birds or animals prefer. I just finished a kind of miniature prairie and the grass is going to seed and it has a brush pile and a pole for meadowlarks to sit on and sing their hearts out.

On the other side is a small space for other kinds of things. It is under construciton, so to speak, but is already favored by certain birds.

I didn't do much today but...

I did write about how people used to wear long underwear over winter or until we began to stink. You can find the link at the bottom of the post today.

  4. Is there anything special in gardens to be shown or is it like inviting a huge party to your house because you feel lonely or something? I would love to see Richmond gardens in any case :)

  5. How many people live in the village? Are you going to show us photos of some of the gardens?

  6. The rain has been frustrating me as well, as a long time cricket fan. Imagine England choosing as their national sport a game which requires 5 days of continuous sunshine. (I know, it's not their national sport, but it sounded better). Anyway I'm glad it held off for your event, and long enough for the test match to reach it's dismal conclusion

  8. I like umbrella shots. I use to collect postcards with umbrellas but haven't for several years now. Ever wonder how many different colors and designs umbrellas have?

  9. Eh... Loving your country that in fact I visited from Cape Wrath to "Land's end" (driving by myself), I adore rain :-) and -of course- cold weather. I'm afraid I was born in the wrong country, isn't it?

  10. Have you seen Isabella's site today?!!! If not...then this is a BIG coincidence! I hear its been quite cold and damp in England recently (what's new there!). Here in Toruń...we are experiencing a huge heat wave. Extremely hot, humid and tropical. Complete with tropical storms. Yesterday my lessons were interupted with a spectacular storm right overhead!!!
